How to Clean Suede Shoes the Right Way (Without Ruining Them)

Last Updated on May 20, 2025 | By Roberto Rolo

Suede shoes are renowned for being difficult to maintain, despite its luxury, softness, and style. Suede, in contrast to smooth leather, has a delicate texture that is not well suited to vigorous scrubbing or water.

What is the proper method for repairing your beloved suede sneakers once they have been scuffed, dirty, or stained?

Suede Brush

1. Brush Off Surface Dirt:

Start with a dry suede brush or soft toothbrush. Gently brush the shoes in one direction to lift surface dirt and restore the nap (that fuzzy texture suede is known for). For tougher spots, you can apply slightly more pressure or use a back-and-forth motion, but always be careful not to damage the material.

Tip: Suede brushes often have a wire side and a rubber side. Use the wire side for stubborn grime, and the rubber side for everyday cleanin

2. Use a Suede Eraser for Marks and Scuffs:

If brushing doesn’t do the trick, a suede eraser (also known as a suede block) can help. Rub the eraser gently over the affected area. You’ll notice a fine powder forming—this is normal. Just brush it away afterward.

No suede eraser? A clean pencil eraser can work in a pinch, though it may not be as effective on deeper marks.

3. Treat Deep Stains with Sneaker Lab Cleaner

For stubborn stains like watermarks, salt residue, or dried mud, a high-quality suede cleaner is essential. Sneaker LAB Cleaner is a reliable, effective option specifically designed for delicate materials like suede.

To use it, mix a few drops of the cleaner with warm water. Gently massage the solution into the stained area using a soft brush or sponge. After cleaning, wipe off any excess with a clean microfiber cloth.

Allow the shoes to air dry completely—never use heat. Once dry, restore the suede’s nap by brushing it with a soft-bristle suede brush.

4. Apply a Suede Protector

Once your shoes are clean and dry, consider applying a suede protector. This will create a barrier that repels water, dirt, and stains, making future cleaning much easier. Reapply the spray every few weeks or after each cleaning session for best results.
